Before the Covid pandemic, there was already a shift into more remote work opportunities. Many people say the pandemic was the final push that we needed to make remote work possible. At the beginning of the shutdown, there was uncertainty about connectivity issues and decreased productivity since there are more distractions at home. Over time, employees quickly adapted to the new working conditions and many businesses have seen an increase in productivity. Now that the world is getting back to somewhat “normal”, the conversation around remote work is still a hot topic. In this blog post, we will look at the advantages of remote work and how it can be beneficial for your company.
1. Cost savings
Since companies are moving towards remote work opportunities, this means that they don’t have to spend money on large office spaces. It also means they do not have to buy office snacks, drinks, furniture or office supplies. Companies used to spend a lot of money on birthday celebrations, holiday parties and company wide meetings but with remote work, this can be done virtually and at a lower cost. It does require companies to think outside the box by sending virtual company swag or gifts to celebrate.
2. Larger candidate pool
When a company is not limited to one location, it allows employers to face a much larger candidate pool. Instead of being restricted to only finding candidates in the Atlanta area, employers can look for candidates in the same region or maybe even globally. Sometimes when hiring in different regions, the candidates desired salary is not as high as those living in big cities since the cost of living may vary. Due to fishing from a larger pool where it’s more affordable, companies can save money on salaries.
3. Reduce turnoverSHRM report stated that nearly a third of workers have sought out a new job because their current workplace didn’t offer remote work or flexible scheduling. If companies offer remote work, employees are more likely to stay at their job which results in a reduced turnover rate. This also means companies are spending less time and money offboarding the previous employee and finding a replacement.
4. Increased productivity
According to FlexJob’s survey, 95% of respondents said their productivity has increased or stayed the same while working from home during the pandemic. Out of those respondents, 51% said that they are more productive when working remotely. Some of the reasons for increased productivity include: less distraction, more focused time, quieter work environment, sense of comfort while working in one’s home, and avoiding office politics or drama.
While remote work is here to stay, it is important to check in with employees to determine if this is something they want or can manage long-term. Remote work has many advantages but it’s not feasible for everyone. Companies need to evaluate feedback from employees and put remote work policies in place in a very strategic manner for it to work.
