Your resume is often the first thing a hiring manager sees when you apply for a job. And if you haven’t been looking for a job in quite a while, you might be giving them an outdated sheet of paper to read. With all of the competition for jobs in certain markets, you don’t want to be sending out a resume that’s been out of style for ten years.
If you’ve been striking out in an extended pursuit of work, take a hard look at your resume and see where it can be revised and improved. Here are five tips to help you through it:
Don’t bother with your objective
You don’t want to be wasting precious space at the top of your resume telling hiring managers what they already know—you want them to grant you an interview and eventually hire you for this job! An objective statement is pointless, and you can eliminate it from your resume.
Instead, summarize your achievements
Use the area right below your contact information to provide an overview of your skills, experience, and achievements. Those items will grab the attention of the manager and give you the opportunity to highlight all those qualifications that set you apart from the other candidates and to match your experiences to the requirements of the job posting.
Drop the buzzwords and add keywords
Forget about those adjectives like “talented” and “hard-working” because they won’t further your cause. Look at the job posting for specific words that describe the knowledge, soft skills, and experience that will be needed in the position. Then, incorporate those words into your resume to ensure that it stands out.
Leave out the graduation dates
Companies are not allowed to discriminate against you because of your age. And there is no reason to invite it. If you graduated from college more than fifteen years ago, don’t include your graduation date on your resume. If you’re a recent college grad, your education information is critical since you’ll have no work history. In that case, you can include dates without worrying about ageism.
Don’t go back too far with your job history
What you did over the last fifteen years is typically all that concerns a hiring manager. This is your relevant experience. If you had an interesting (and pertinent) job that goes back more than that, you can include it. Just don’t provide any dates!
