You’ve taken all of the standard steps in finding your next job: revamped your resume, tailored your cover letter to each company, and gave all your social media accounts a professional look.
But are you aware that sending your application at the wrong time of day could offset all those other important strategies? According to recent studies, if you send your application at 7:30 pm, your chance of getting an interview drops to a paltry 3%. Even if you email it a bit earlier—say between 4:00 pm and 6:00 pm—your chances are still rather slim at 5%!
So, what is the best time to apply for a new job since the evening hours are not? The study discovered that if you send your information between 6:00 am and 10:00 am, you are five times more likely to get that much-anticipated invitation. So, if you want to be the one who receives the call, make sure you’re the one who sends the application when it will catch the hiring manager’s attention.
Arrive at the inbox early
The hiring manager’s inbox can get overloaded quickly. Avoid that by sending your application early and being one of the first items on the list. It will help if you write the email the night before and save it. Then use the scheduler to send it right around the time you leave for work the next morning.
Lunchtime is the next best choice
Although your chances for an interview diminish after 10:00 am, there is a slight uptick at around 12:30 pm. That’s when many hiring managers catch up on their messages right after they eat lunch.
Check the time zone
Remember, these windows of opportunity for having your application noticed (early morning and lunchtime) are only reliable if you’re sending them within the same time zone as the company to which you are applying. So, always check the time zone if you’re applying to another city or state.
Come up with a good subject line
Keep your subject line short and sweet using keywords that relate to the position to which you’re applying. Those keywords make it easily searchable and will help the hiring manager find it when he needs your information to call you for an interview.
