Interviews are nerve-racking. You have one shot to impress the hiring manager and you don’t want to mess it up. This is why it is so important to be proactive and ask questions during an interview. This will not only help you dictate how the interview goes but it also shows the interviewer that you have done your research and are assertive. Take control of the interview and give yourself the best chance to get hired by asking these three questions:
“What does your ideal candidate embody?”
It’s important to ask this question early in the interview. The answer to this question will also be highly informative as to how you should proceed throughout the rest of the interview.
Example: Let’s say you are interviewing for an accounting job in Atlanta. You ask this question and, to your surprise, the interviewer informs you that this position requires a lot of client management, so they are looking for someone with great communication skills. You can use this information to speak to your relatable experience throughout the interview.
“If I started this position tomorrow, what would be my first priority?”
The response to this question may better inform you as to what your day-to-day tasks may be. This question also forces the interviewer to envision you in this role. Having you in this position, even in a hypothetical situation, will make you a more believable hire in his or her mind.
“Based on what you’ve seen, can you see me being successful in this role?”
This is a very bold question, but what do you have to lose? This may be your one shot to prove yourself to this company. If the answer is no, find out what the hold ups are and see if you can’t just convince the hiring manager otherwise. If the answer to the question is yes, then it just reaffirms that thought in the interviewer’s mind. Even if you don’t get the job, this can be a great confidence boost to take into your next interview.
