10 Steps to a Successful Interview

Review these tips for a successful interview:

  1. Arrive on time.
  2. Introduce yourself in a courteous manner.
  3. Read company materials while you wait.
  4. Have a firm handshake.
  5. Listen.
  6. Use body language to show interest.
  7. Give nonverbal feedback to the interviewer, such as smiling and nodding your head.
  8. Ask what the next step is before ending the interview.
  9. Thank the interviewer.
  10. Write a thank you letter to anyone who interviewed you.

FOCUS Interviewing Tips

Come prepared to the interview:

  • Review the company's Web site and any related news articles you can find.
  • Review the job description and be prepared to talk about why you are a good fit for the job.
  • Practice answering common interview questions so you are more confident of your answers during the interview.

Presentation is half of the battle:

  • Good presentation is half of the battle of a successful interview.
  • Regardless of the weather, men should wear a suit and tie and women should wear a suit and blouse. No bare legs, sandals, visible tattoos or piercings or perfumes/colognes.
  • Do not chew gum.
  • Arrive at your interview ten minutes before the appointment.
  • Remember that once you enter the company premises, your presentation and behavior may be observed. REMAIN PROFESSIONAL AT ALL TIMES.

During the interview:

  • Pay attention.
  • Listen carefully.
  • Do not interrupt the person talking to you.
  • Have good eye contact, but do not stare.
  • Bring a list of questions relating to the position. This shows that you are enthusiastic and prepared.
  • If you meet with several recruiters/interviewers at once, this is called a group interview. Do not be intimidated, and try to look at everyone.
